Turkish rugs are known for its intricate floral and animal
designs with very deep colors. But where did these rugs originate?
Are they rugs from Turkey, which explains why the name? The
history of Turkish rugs takes us to the twelfth century. Back
then, Turks were trained proper ways of weaving. There were
apparently eighteen documents carpets and fragments that were
accordingly of the Seljuk Origin. It can be clearly noted
how savvy Turks were when weaving rugs was the subject. Out
of these eighteen documented carpets, eight were discovered
from Aladdin Mosque (Anatolian Selcuks capital city). Out
these eight, 3 of them are large and completed rugs, another
three are larger fragments taken from smaller rugs, and the
remaining two are small fragments from the larger rugs. Traditionally,
Turkish rugs have hooked geometric designs with eight pointed
stars. However, its characteristics relatively changed by
the fourteenth century, when more and more characteristics
and designs as well as motifs were created. Because of the
ability of the Turks to create distinctive rug designs, several
court workshops started to open in Istanbul by the nineteenth
century, thus producing more exquisitely designed rugs and
carpets. To date, Istanbul, Turkey, rug-shopping haven of
the world is widely appreciated for their great role in producing
one of the most elegant types of rugs, the Turkish rugs.
Before you buy Turkish rugs, there are certain factors that
you should be aware of. First, identify whether you prefer
the machine woven rugs or the hand-woven ones, also called
tufted. Machine-woven Turkish rugs are the ones commonly in
stores and boutiques because these are mostly the ones purchased
by both homeowners and business establishments. On the other
hand, the tufted Turkish rugs are also great choices. In fact,
they are far better than the machine-woven ones in terms of
elegance and sophistication. Hand-woven Turkish rugs have
distinctive designs that cannot be seen with the ordinary
ones, which explains why these types of rugs are far more
expensive compared to the machine-woven Turkish rugs. Second
thing to consider is the density of the Turkish rugs. Its
density should be between 40 and 1000. You can further ask
about this thru your local home furnishing shops and rug distributors.
Third, take note of the dyes used in these rugs. Identify
whether they are dyed using natural dyes or synthetic dyes.
Synthetic dyes are best advised because they have components
that can keep your rugs from unwanted fading. Fourth, make
sure you know how to maintain Turkish rugs and that you have
to be careful about the cleaning materials and components
that you will be using with your rugs. Furthermore, check
if there is an underlay on your rugs because these are also
helpful in keeping the look of your rugs. Finally, distinguish
naturally made Turkish rugs from the ones synthetically made.
The natural ones are mostly made from either silk or wool,
and sometimes even cotton. Consequently, synthetically woven
Turkish rugs can either have materials like nylon, acrylic,
or polyester. Comparing both, naturally woven Turkish rugs
are more expensive than those synthetically woven. But whichever
is your choice; you are assured to get the best of the Turkish
rugs.

not only speak of class but they also exude astounding elegance
